On Saturday 27th June, James & Jenkins opened itís doors for a different kind of business, show businesses to be precise!
Our Llandaff North show room is located in a building know as the Tivoli, the reason being because it used to be the Tivoli Cinema. Built and opened in 1914, The Tivoli was originally called the Royal Cinema but was renamed Llandaff Cinema in 1924, however, a fire damaged the building in 1930 and it was subsequently reopened under a different ownership and name (The Tivoli) in 1935. It went on to supply the local area with a wide variety of on-screen entertainment right up until itís unexpected closure in 1958, a local area of which we are rather fond, so when the opportunity to be part of the Llandaff North Festival came up, we jumped at the chance!
After being approached by organisers, Lewys Wootten and Norman Gettings it was agreed that for one night only the building should be transformed back into itís original purpose. Local residents, who had enjoyed all that was on offer during the part of the festival held in Hailey Park, packed up their chairs and picnics and carried them to James & Jenkins, where the very last film that was ever screened at the Tivoli was given new life again. ďThe Night We Dropped a ClangerĒ is a playful Brian Rix farce and entertained the viewers with a lot of slapstick and some serious innuendo!
Lewys introduced the film, thanking company Renown Pictures (who own the rights to the film) for providing the opportunity to show it and Film Hub Wales and Cinema For All for supporting the event. There was also a round of applause for Mark Jenkins in thanks for providing such a historically relevant venue in which to show the film. The event also included a family matinee of film Paddington on Sunday afternoon, attended by lots of families, sheltering from the Sunday rain. After both films were shown Lewys said that it had been such a success, the organising committee were thinking of organising a regular monthly film night. Unfortunately James & Jenkins wonít be able to host a monthly evening but canít wait to be involved in all the excitement at next years festival where we will be very happy to re-open as the Trivoli Cinema once more!
